Messaging Matters: Our Philosophy on Building Strategic Narratives

At TellMed, we believe that messaging is the single most undervalued tool in corporate communications. It underpins every successful initiative. Whether launching a new product, updating a website, or announcing a leadership change, the effectiveness of your message determines how clearly your audience understands not just what you’re saying, but who you are. That’s why messaging isn’t just a tactic. It’s a strategy. And for us, it’s an art.

When clients come to us, it’s usually because something has shifted and they are looking to appropriately define and/or share this shift. Sometimes it’s external: a product is nearing approval, a merger is underway, or the company’s positioning no longer reflects its ambitions. Sometimes it’s internal: new leadership, expanded pipelines, or evolving culture. Often, it’s both.

What is consistent amongst clients is the tension between wanting strategic, meaningful messaging and not having the time or structure to get there. Our job is to collaboratively bridge that gap.

Different companies need different approaches.

Every company is unique. It’s focus, values, commitments, size, approach, inter-colleague relationships collectively vary drastically from others. Understanding these drivers allows us to define the approach to messaging and the messaging itself.

Size and stage are good places to start. Large, established corporations often struggle with alignment. With so many layers of leadership, it’s not uncommon for executives to hold conflicting visions of the company’s identity or future direction. In these cases, we lead structured in-person workshops that serve as both a springboard and a mirror, bringing clarity to the differences, and consensus to the path forward.

Mid-size companies tend to be in the thick of transformation. Their pipelines are expanding, their teams are growing, and their legacy messaging is out of sync with where they’re headed. Our role is to help them evolve, connecting their emerging complexities into a unified narrative that reflects their next chapter.

Startups often have clarity of mission but can sometimes struggle to articulate it. With tightly connected leadership and a focused platform, these companies move fast. We help them capture that momentum with language that’s crisp, compelling, and credible, giving them the messaging they need to raise capital, hire talent, or build visibility.

Regardless of company size, our approach is designed to meet clients where they are. We balance strategic depth with practical execution, honoring the input of key voices while staying mindful of timelines, internal bandwidth, and the end goal.

How We Work: Our Messaging Framework

Our process is intentionally streamlined but thoughtfully structured. While every engagement is tailored, our core methodology includes the following:

  1. Diagnose the Landscape
We begin by assessing the current state of messaging and identifying the triggers: Why now? What’s changed? Who needs to be involved in the decision-making? This step helps us define the right format and workflow for each company. For some clients,  it is a phased series of tailored stakeholder touchpoints designed to match their individual needs, while for others it’s a half-day workshop or a one-hour call.
  1. Deploy the Messaging Assessment Tool
We use a proprietary messaging assessment tool to evaluate current communications, identify inconsistencies, gather input, and map against business evolution. This isn’t just a word audit; it’s a strategic deep-dive.
  1. Analyze and Recommend
We synthesize the results and develop a clear perspective on what’s working, what’s missing, and where opportunity lies. Our recommendations often blend message architecture with early directional language.
  1. Facilitate Stakeholder Engagement
Depending on the initial landscape diagnosis and the company size, structure and resources, we implement a carefully designed system to align on vision, hierarchy, and language, ultimately distilling core narrative elements.
  1. Deliver and Refine
We present a full message framework, including specific language customized to the company’s voice and future. Details matter, and aligning company descriptors is as critical as the strategies that drive them.

We pride ourselves on being both strategic and human in our approach. Messaging shouldn’t feel like a branding exercise, it should reflect the soul of the company, shaped by the people who know it best. That’s why our process blends rigor with empathy, structure with flexibility, and listening with leadership.
